He has a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities facing the maritime industry, and is passionate about using technology to drive innovation and efficiency.

Samuel remains a member of the Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship volunteering with various startups.

In his free time, Samuel enjoys spending time with his family and coaching youth football.

10.20 - Cybersecurity testing + training with bridge equipment in a lab
Fraunhofer CML has built a ship bridge in its laboratory, with real hardware and antennas, which can be used to test out the cybersecurity of different shipboard equipment.

This "bridge lab" can also be used for crew training, with simulated cyber attacks.

The researchers use it to identify cybersecurity problems in the interface between IT and OT, thought to be one of the biggest threat areas.

It can be used to test out possible risks from crewmember laptops, satellite communication systems, GPS jamming, and in the interfaces between systems.
Anisa Rizvanolli, Team Leader 'Maritime Scientific Computing and Optimization', Fraunhofer CML

10.40 - How the maritime cybersecurity threat picture is changing
Industry digitalization offers big opportunities, yet it comes with a new set of cyber security risks we have to consider. Let’s imagine we have forgotten about cyber security during digitalization – what can go wrong? What if it really happens? How can we mitigate the risk and be well prepared for it?
Marcin Marciniak
, Maritime Cyber Security Team, EY Poland

11.00 - 11.40 - Break

Mathieu Cros, principal advisor, Euroconsult

11.40 - Maritime Satellite Communications – Market views and forecasts

  • Maritime satellite communication operators are expected to surpass $1.1 billion in revenues by 2032

  • Forecast on GEO and NGSO in the maritime market

Mathieu Cros, Principal Advisor, Euroconsult

Bio: At Euroconsult, Mathieu manages consulting missions for various stakeholder from the satcom market leveraging his in-depth knowledge of the satcom market dynamics.

Mathieu has been working in satcom sector for over 15 years. He started his career with an engineering background at Airbus provisioning satellite communications on behalf of European countries. From 2015 onwards, Mathieu developed a focus on Mobile Connectivity at Marlink across all 5 continents for land and maritime market. He has gained expertise in fishing, shipping, offshore, cruise and leisure markets.

Panel Discussion:

12.10 - Panel discussion: Plotting the course for maritime digitalisation

  • CYBERSECURITY - Is the cybersecurity focus switching to situation awareness rather than seeking technology-driven solution? Are we going about it in the right way?

  • LEOS - How much is Starlink changing things - does anyone have any experiences with it to share?

  • DATA ANALYTICS - Should data analytics be handled by data scientists or within software? Is generative AI a gamechanger or an incremental innovation? What are the main success drivers for data driven innovation? What the key elements of ‘democratising’ analytics (making data more accessible to more people in the organisation)?

  • APPLICATION MANAGEMENT - Should we put bigger focus on application management? Do companies have too many different applications, or too much trouble switching between them?

Participants:

Samuel Jones
Head of Application Management, TORM

Anisa Rizvanolli,
team leader 'Maritime Scientific Computing and Optimization', Fraunhofer CML

Asger C. Schliemann-Haug, Systems Engineering Specialist, Lloyd’s Register

2.00 - Managing the challenge of alarm overload

  • Research by LR together with graduate marine engineering students to understand impact of alarm overload, based on visiting 16 ships and interviewing 60 watchkeepers

  • Are today’s watchkeepers able to respond to alarms, or do they receive too many?

  • Potential impact on future autonomous ships and cybersecurity

2.50 - A digital tool to support decision making  about which energy system to use

  • Live demonstration of VTT's platform "ND00"

  •  Finding the best design from a number of different energy system design scenarios

  •  Reducing time, efforts and costs of the conceptual design and optimization process of ship energy systems.

  •  The platform has been under development for 10 years; VTT used EU funding  under the "VesselAI project" to extend its capabilities in AI, data analytics and digital twins, and to use high performance computing.

Zou Guangrong, Senior Scientist - Shipping Intelligence, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland

He has coordinated and managed a list of national and EU projects, incl. the VesselAI project funded through the European Horizon 2020 programme. He is also the coordinator of a newly funded national collaborative action BESPORT, aiming for the digitalization and decarbonization of port and wider logistics chain and beyond.

Panel Discussion:

3.10 Panel discussion: Plotting the course for improving vessel performance with the help of digital technology

  • What are the most important company decisions or actions related to vessel performance, and do we have tools we need to help us make them better?

  • Are we doing a good job so far of engaging crew and making it easier for crew to contribute to vessel performance?

  • Can the complexity of vessel performance and associated decision making be made easier, and could digital tools do more to help?

  • What we would we like to see more of, from digital professionals and digital products? Are there areas we think could be better?

  • Are we ready for the demands of compliance with EU ETS?
